How many times do I need to flush the toilet when you say to "flush the lines"? How can that possibly work?

Dear Confused Caroline, 

Flushing the lines means to run the cold water in a sink for about 15 minutes to let all the water that is in the lines "flush out". This helps to remove unwanted discoloring in the water and any sediments that are floating around!
